What is this type of sound?
A boot landing on a steel plate. First a sharp "clack," then a tiny metallic ring. Square works better than Noise here — Noise turns it into broken glass. This is the default footstep for industrial levels, spaceship corridors, and robot feet.
Common uses
- Sci-fi corridors
- Robots
- Armor movement
- Industrial levels
How to create it
The best result depends on the role of the sound in your project. Use the generator to test variations rather than treating one parameter combination as a fixed recipe.
- Start with the metal step preset and listen to the initial result.
- Adjust the duration to fit the speed and importance of the event.
- Experiment with pitch and waveform to find a sound that suits the scene.
- Set the volume so the effect remains clear alongside music, voice and other sounds.
- Preview the sound in context and compare a few variations before exporting.
Practical design tips
Start Frequency at 1200, no hesitation. Frequency Change at -150 over 8 milliseconds is what gives the "clack" its metal edge. I started with Low Pass Alpha at 0.8, too piercing, settled on 0.55. Length 0.09 seconds. For a heavy mech, raise Peak from 1.4 to 1.8 and stretch Release to 0.12. For stealth, do the opposite — Peak down to 1.1 so the player doesn't announce every step.
Frequently asked questions
What is a metal step sound effect?
It is an audio cue designed to communicate a metal step event. It can be used in games, interfaces, animation or other interactive projects.
Can I create this sound in my browser?
Yes. The SfxMaker generator runs in the browser and lets you adjust sound parameters, preview the result and save a WAV file.
Do I need to upload an audio file?
No. The basic generator workflow creates the sound locally in the browser from the selected parameters.
Can I use the generated WAV in a game?
You can evaluate and use the generated result according to the applicable rights and licenses of the software components involved and the requirements of your project. Review third-party component licenses for your project.
